Schütz: St. Matthew Passion

Antiqua Series

This concert presents Heinrich Schütz’s St. Matthew Passion in a newly commissioned English translation by musicologist and Baroque specialist Chester Alwes. Written late in Schütz’s life amid the devastation of the Thirty Years’ War, the work’s striking austerity reflects a world marked by loss, scarcity, and moral exhaustion, where meaning is carried by words rather than spectacle. Sung without instruments and shaped by clarity of text, the Passion offers a restrained yet deeply human telling of the story, one that speaks with renewed force in times of uncertainty and division.
