The Masses of Francis Poulenc and Giles Swayne
Faith Reimagined pairs two twentieth-century a cappella Mass settings that approach the same ancient text from sharply different perspectives. Francis Poulenc’s Mass in G, written in 1936–37, reflects a period of renewed religious commitment and is marked by tonal clarity, restraint, and an inward expressive stance. Composed half a century later, Giles Swayne’s Missa Tiburtina (1986) draws on medieval chant traditions and repetitive structures to create a rigorously modal, ritualized musical language. Heard together, these works demonstrate how twentieth-century composers from different national and aesthetic traditions reinterpreted the Mass not by altering the text, but by radically rethinking its musical vocabulary and expressive possibilities.
