2022–23 Season

Monteverdi’s Venetian Vespers of 1641

During Monteverdi’s 30 year tenure as Maestro di Cappella of St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, he did not publish any sacred choral music until the very end. This single publication, Selva Morale et Spirituali, contains music that Monteverdi chose to represent the very best of his illustrious career. In collaboration with the Kansas City Baroque Consortium, Te Deum brought to life this music of deep faith, infectious charm, and musical virtuosity.

A Glimpse of Heaven

The profound spirituality and compositional genius of the 16th century’s treasures were celebrated in works by Tallis, Byrd, Palestrina, Lassus, Josquin, and more. The highest aim for the Renaissance sacred composer was to give the listener a reprieve from daily strife, and offer a peace-filled glimpse of heavenly serenity. This concert offered the 21st century listener a peek at the celestial sliver for which the greatest Renaissance composers sought.

O Magnum Mysterium

Meaningful aspects of the season were explored and celebrated by structuring the concert around four different musical settings of one of the most famous Christmas texts, O Magnum Mysterium. Each section explored one of the 4 lines of text – the mystery of this gift, the animals present at the birth, that sacrifice and love of the mother, and finally, “Alleluia,” a song of praise and joy.

Mozart Requiem

Combining with the Te Deum Chamber Orchestra and distinguished soloists, Te Deum celebrated its 15th season with Mozart Requiem, a masterpiece work and  showcase of virtuosity and emotion.
